Fiat Barchetta
The leftfield alternative to the Mazda MX-5 is the Fiat Barchetta. And if you’re going to take a punt, make sure it’s bright yellow and has around 53,000 miles on the odometer. Oh, how funny is it that we managed to find just such a thing? You’ll need to compromise a tad, since it’s left-hand drive, but surely that’s worth it for gaining such a clean example of this much-loved, 16-valved Italian.

A Lotus Elan. In (fading) white. With a manual gearbox. A used car purchase doesn’t get much better than that. If not purely for its low-weight construction and mechanical acumen, the M100 Elan’s gorgeous design should be plenty to tempt your coffers open. It’s also got a stainless steel exhaust and retrimmed upholstery, in case you needed further encouragement.

When placed alongside the Elan, the Jaguar XK8 really does show the depth of Britain’s classic roadster lineup. Perhaps a little short on the sportiness offered by some of the above alternatives, but one thing you’ll almost always get with a Golf is reliability. And though it’s ‘just’ a Golf, the styling of these late second generation models have really grown on us over time.
