A FIRST LOOK AT THE UPCOMING KARL LAGERFELD TV SERIES HAS BEEN RELEASED

Fashion fans are in for a treat: now, as well as a TV series about Christian Dior, a show dedicated to the life and career of the legendary designer Karl Lagerfeld is coming this summer.

Becoming Karl Lagerfeld will chart the legacy of Lagerfeld, who helmed some of the world's most prominent fashion houses, from Chanel to Chloé and Fendi, before launching his own label. He died in 2019 aged 85, and is celebrated as one of the most famous designers in history, with the 2023 Met Gala held in his honour.

The highly anticipated six-episode drama series will premiere all episodes on 7 June, exclusively on Disney+ internationally and on Hulu in the US. Teaser images, starring German actor Daniel Brühl in the title role, have already been released, showing Brühl embodying the late German designer, signature ponytail and all.

So what else do we know about the upcoming series? Here are all the details we have so far, from the cast to the plot.

What is Becoming Karl Lagerfeld about?

Based on the biography of Karl Lagerfeld by Raphaëlle Bacqué – who is attached to the series alongside writers Isaure Pisani-Ferry and Jennifer Have – Becoming Karl Lagerfeld is set in the fashionable world of 1970s Paris. The series "begins during the summer of 1972 and traces Lagerfeld’s quest to become successor of Coco Chanel, who died the year prior, and the most successful French couturier at a time when Yves Saint Laurent was the biggest fashion personality," says Disney+. "The rivalry between Lagerfeld and Pierre Bergé (Yves Saint Laurent’s partner) as well as Lagerfeld’s love story with Jacques de Bascher will also be central to the series."

"More than a period piece, Kaiser Karl will delve into Lagerfeld's world and his personality – a character who, while quite famous, cultivated and maintained an air of intense mystery," continues Disney+. "It will shine a light on the high-end fashion houses of the 70s as well as how Lagerfeld built his unique and sometimes controversial personal brand in a world where appearances are everything. "

Who is starring in it?

German actor Daniel Brühl (who has previously starred in Captain America: Civil War and All Quiet on the Western Front) will take on the role of Lagerfeld, with Arnaud Valois and Alex Lutz playing his fashion rivals Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Théodore Pellerin will play Jacques de Bascher and Agnès Jaoui will portray Chloé founder Gaby Aghion, who was famously one of the first to spot Lagerfeld's extraordinary talent.

French cool-girl and Rouje’s designer Jeanne Damas will play the inimitable Paloma Picasso, the daughter of the famous artist Pablo Picasso. She joins others in portraying the creatives of the time, including Paul Spera as Andy Warhol; Sunnyi Melles as actress Marlene Dietrich; and Claire Laffut as designer Loulou de la Falaise.

When will it be released?

The series, directed by Jérôme Salle and Audrey Estrougo, is currently shooting in France, Monaco and Italy, but has no official release date yet – all we know is that it is set to drop on Disney+ later this year, and we'll be glued to our seats when it does.
