ABSORBING BRITISH PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER WITH KNOCKOUT PERFORMANCES GETS NEW UK STREAMING HOME

An acclaimed psychological thriller starring Adolescence's Emmy-winning actor Erin Doherty in a disturbing role has found a new streaming home in the UK.

Originally released in 2024, writer-director Virginia Gilbert's movie Reawakening stars Juliet Stevenson and Jared Harris as Mary and John, a couple who are left devastated by the sudden disappearance of their teenage daughter Clare.

When Clare returns as a 24-year-old woman a decade later, now played by Doherty, the couple face a dilemma. Despite the understandable relief and happiness of being reunited with their long-lost daughter, John grows convinced that Clare may not be who she says she is.

As Mary tries to convince him Clare is indeed back, John can't rest, as his doubts trigger an investigation to uncover the truth.

Premiered at Dublin International Film Festival in 2024, Reawakening is now streaming on Prime Video after being added to the platform's catalogue today.

The film also stars Harriet Kelleher as teenage Clare, as well as Nicholas Pinnock, Debra Baker and Niamh Cusack.

Reawakening currently holds a critics' score of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes out of 10 reviews. Critics have been praising the performances in Gilbert's movie, an "absorbing and effective" tale about the truths we choose to believe (via Screen International).

Elsewhere, The Times celebrated Gilbert's writing as "sophisticated" as well as the film's "two knockout central turns" that make this tense drama worth your while.

On the other hand, Cineuropa noted that Reawakening doesn't dig as deep as it could have when tackling an "impossible situation" for desperate parents Mary and John.

"Gilbert doesn't fully exploit the moral and emotional quandary that John and Mary are put in, as if the filmmaker were too nervous to get her hands dirty and have her characters be truly torn apart by this impossible situation," the review reads.

Reawakening is Gilbert's second film after 2013's A Long Way From Home, starring James Fox and Brenda Fricker as Joseph and Brenda, a couple who fulfil their dream to enjoy retirement in the south of France.

Once there, however, Joseph becomes drawn to younger couple, Suzanne (Natalie Dormer) and Mark (Paul Nicholls), as this new friendship risks upending his marriage.

Reawakening is streaming on Prime Video in the UK.
