The release of a new Despicable Me movie can mean only one thing: lots more Lego sets based on Gru and his increasingly bizarre Minions.
It’s hard to believe, but the Minions will be 14 years old this June and to celebrate there’s a new Despicable Me film coming out… and four new Lego sets based on it.
This won’t be the first time there’s been Minions-based Lego, as there were several sets based around the Minions: The Rise Of Gru spin-off, but the new ones for Despicable Me 4 are led by a new brick-built display of both Gru and his pesky underlings.
To tie in with the movie’s plot, this will be the first time there’s been Lego versions of the Mega Minions and the Anti-Villain League (AVL) Minions, with the former being bigger than the normal sort, with superpowers like flight and being able to stretch even taller.
The four new sets are aimed at kids from ages six to nine and will able be available from Wednesday, May 1. The movie will be released on July 3 in the UK.
The cheapest of the four sets includes 136 Lego pieces, so you can make a banana car and four completely different Minions. It also has a removable engine and a bunch of tools and gadgets to fix and customise the car. It costs £19.99.
This 379 piece set includes another four Minions and a special bus that can open up to reveal a party playset, complete with speakers, DJ station, and a hot tub. It also includes instruments for the Minions to play, balloons, and even some neon-coloured party drinks. The set costs £34.99.
The most unique of the sets is an entirely brick-built model of both Gru and a selection of five of his Minions. Gru has moveable, fully jointed arms, hands, and figures. Meanwhile each of the Minions has different accessories, from maracas to a ray gun. The whole display also rotates and is made up of 839 pieces, it costs £49.99.
The biggest of the sets includes not just Gru’s mansion but also a tree house and zipline. This set has the most minifigures, with Gru, Lucy, Gru Jr., and the girls Margo, Edith, and Agnes. You also get three Mega Minions and a ton of detail inside the mansion, if you turn it around, including a laboratory. The set costs £89.99 and is made up of 868 pieces.
