ACCORDING TO EXPERTS, THESE ARE THE ESSENTIAL SKILLS YOU SHOULD DEVELOP AT WORK THIS YEAR

The world of work requires you to master a lot of different skills, and competencies.

Apart from the core knowledge you’ll need to do your actual job – whether that’s Java programming or Japanese translation – there are a host of other things you’ll need to get right.

Timekeeping, for one. This is an utterly fundamental skill that greases the wheels of efficient teams.

When you’re on time, you’re respecting others’ time; you’re showing that you know how to manage yourself efficiently, and that you can meet deadlines and be productive. All that goes a long way towards fostering great working relationships.

Then there are other skills that are important to nurture. These include cultivating a positive attitude, being able to communicate effectively, the ability to work well in teams (alongside efficiently working in a self-directed way), plus showing a willingness to learn. These all matter because they contribute to frictionless experiences in the workplace.

New skills matter now

But skills move on, just like everything else does. And if you came into the workforce within the last 10 or 15 years, you’ve likely seen a lot of things evolve. From the adoption of new technological advances, to cultural shifts in how we both talk about and include others, as well as plenty of economic changes, UK workers have proven to be an ever-adaptable bunch.

Thanks to factors which include the rise of generative AI and downsizing of teams across tech and financial services firms over the past 18 months, things are changing again and employees who want to build their workplace resilience will need to do a couple of new things this year.

While it’s unlikely that your boss is going to replace your job with artificial intelligence any time soon, what could be a threat is someone who is proficient in the use of these new tools.

So whether it is getting to grips with how ChatGPT can streamline one or two of your work processes, or learning about the benefits of AI chatbots or productivity tools, it’s a good idea to acknowledge the technology is here to stay.

The rise of AI has also opened up new opportunities for workers. As of yet, artificial intelligence simply cannot do many things that are unique to humans. As a result, ‘soft skills’ like empathy and creative problem solving are on the rise as employers recognise that while AI can be productive, it can’t create people-centred company culture that makes work a nice place to be.

If you’ve already been working on a new skillset, then you’re in great shape for a job hunt. Explore the Metro Job Board to see what’s out there: it’s packed full of interesting jobs that are constantly updated, like the three below.
