GOD OF WAR RAGNARöK SEQUEL APPEARS TO BE UNDERWAY AS STUDIO STAFFS UP

A number of job listings at Santa Monica Studio suggest development is ramping up on the next God Of War, but will it be a full sequel?

While Santa Monica Studio hasn’t confirmed if it is working on a sequel to God Of War Ragnarök, there’s been evidence since last year that they’ve started work on *something* new.

A job listing implied the studio was hiring for another God Of War project, while other recent rumours claimed it would be a ‘half-sequel’, in the same vein as Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy.

These rumours emerged before God Of War Ragnarök’s surprise Valhalla DLC in December last year but, even so, it seems like development on a new game of some sort is underway, judging by a wave of new job listings at Santa Monica Studio.

On the PlayStation careers page, there are 24 positions available at the studio for an unannounced project, ranging from gameplay programmers to environment artists and animators.

The post for senior combat designer suggests these positions are tied to a God Of War-related title, with the studio looking for ‘candidates who are fluent with the combat design choices, systems, mechanics, and enemies in God Of War and God Of War Ragnarök’.

While it’s possible this could be an entirely unrelated project, which takes combat cues from these titles, it does seem unlikely that a potential new IP would steer so closely to God Of War’s defining trait.

God Of War Ragnarök was also a big success, with over 15 million copies sold by November last year, so another one seems like a no-brainer.

But what could the sequel entail? Some fans hope that it could be set in Ancient Egypt, as that was one of the original concepts for the 2018 game.

For those who have played God Of War Ragnarök and its Valhalla DLC though, coupled with the rumours of a half-sequel, a spin-off starring Kratos’ son Atreus feels like the most obvious option at this point.

Sony has made it clear that no ‘major franchise titles’ will be out before next April but it’s unclear whether that would include a half-sequel, of the sort that’s being rumoured.
